Welcome to Finki.
We're Jaylene & Tynan, the husband and wife team
working behind the counter here at Finki.
Our business began in 2009 as a small independent label that made clothing and jewellery. We primarily sold at markets and collective spaces, before we took on a fantastic shop space on Sydney rd, Brunswick.
After working in Brunswick for many years, we moved the shop to Northcote in 2019 so we could be closer to home and school for our kids.
Starting out in markets and being surrounded by the Melbourne makers community is something that has always been close to our hearts, so we've tried to create the same environment in our shop by offering a diverse range of products that represent not only our own Finki label but the work of many independent Australian designers too.
About Finki Handmade, the label.
The name Finki was created from a smoosh of our kid's names Finn and Kierah and the handmade part ... well that's what we're all about.
Jaylene is the creative force behind all the Finki products.
Being taught how to sew by her mum at a young age and surrounded by yarn, fabric and art her whole life, it's definitely been a passion project of hers to create pieces that bring a bit of colour and joy to your day.
She's an absolute fabric addict and can't go past a quirky printed cotton, without buying it. This business all began because we simply ran out of room to house all that fabric, so she had to start making things for a bigger audience than just family and friends.
Being a plus size girl, Jaylene prioritized making a range of woman's clothes that fit sizes 8 to 20 as she was sick of never being able to find clothes to wear that weren't black or beige.
Over the years, the Finki range has evolved to include men's screen printed tees, acrylic and resin jewellery, stationery and home wares too.
We're proud to say that after all these years, our Finki label is still Australian made, with most of the production happening in our Preston studio.
About Finki, the shop.
Our shop is home to our own Finki label, alongside the work of over 50 independent Australian designers/makers and some of our favorite Australian ethical clothing brands.
We fill the shop with colorful, quirky and ethically made pieces for men and women alike, offering a selection of clothing, jewellery and gifts that we love.
Most of our items are one offs or made in very limited numbers with a focus on classic cuts, natural fibers and timeless designs. The practical sort of things you'll keep for years to come and want to wear or use every day.
The shop itself is centrally located just a 5 minute walk from both the High st and St.Georges rd trams, directly opposite the Northcote train station and a 1 minute walk from the 508 bus stop on Arthurton rd.
We have the Herbert Cafe across the road, offering scrumptious toasties and coffee or a short stroll up to High st will open up a world of dining options from Vietnamese and Israeli cuisine to a classic pub lunch.
Whether you pop in for a quick visit to buy a birthday present or need a new outfit for work, a visit to Finki is sure to make your day.
